Fiber optic cable selection depends on where the cable will be laid, how many strands are needed and the mechanical and environmental conditions it will face. In the energy sector the most common type is OPGW, which also serves as the earth wire of the high-voltage line. Inside buildings, fire behaviour and bend radius come to the fore.
Cable types
| Type | Full name | Use |
|---|---|---|
| OPGW | Optical Ground Wire | Fiber embedded in the earth wire of 154 kV and 380 kV lines; the backbone of TEİAŞ communication infrastructure |
| ADSS | All-Dielectric Self-Supporting | Metal-free aerial cable that supports its own weight between towers |
| Armoured outdoor | Armoured outdoor cable | Duct, manhole and direct-burial applications |
| Indoor | Indoor / riser | Telecom rooms, cabinet-to-cabinet and vertical installation |
| Patch cable | Patch cord / pigtail | Connections between the ODF and SDH, switches and media converters |
Fiber types
- Single Mode — G.652D
- Standard single-mode fiber. Long distance (20–120 km) and high capacity; the default choice for all inter-site links.
- Single Mode — G.655 / G.657
- G.655 for long-haul DWDM, G.657 for bend-insensitive in-building applications.
- Multi Mode — OM3 / OM4
- 50/125 µm; short-distance (300–550 m) high-speed links within a facility.
- Strand count
- 2, 4, 8, 12, 24, 48, 96 and higher configurations
- Connector
- SC, LC, ST, FC — UPC or APC polish
