TEİAŞ RTU Solutions

An RTU (Remote Terminal Unit) provides central control in SCADA systems and handles communication between the control centre and the SCADA system.

The TEİAŞ RTU system is indispensable for switchyards built as generation facilities and connected to TEİAŞ over 154–380 kV lines (wind, hydro, geothermal, natural gas and thermal power plants). The contractor is obliged to prepare the RTU communication before provisional acceptance of the switchyard.

What is an RTU and what is it used for?

All electrification information and input/output data at a site (digital input, digital output, analog input, analog output) is collected in a single RTU system. This data is carried over the chosen communication medium to another centre where it is monitored, and where required, remote control is provided through the output interfaces.

Areas of use

RTUs have a very wide range of application: energy, defence, natural gas distribution, oil, electricity and food, among many other sectors. Although the gap between RTUs and PLCs keeps narrowing, RTUs with advanced built-in communication features are frequently preferred in critical projects because they can be managed from a single centre. Remote monitoring and management of substations and stations is carried out with RTUs.

RTU features and basic I/O

RS-485 communication port
RS-485 and Modbus have become standard in automation applications. This port makes it possible to communicate with and control measuring instruments and meters.
Analog Input
Used to read device information, sensor data, current and voltage values and transmit them to the centre. Specialised variants such as 4–20 mA and 0–10 V exist.
Analog Output
Used for proportional control and for controlling field equipment. Specialised outputs such as 4–20 mA and 0–10 V are available.
Digital Input
Used for dry-contact data reading, detecting switch status, and relaying faults and alarms to the centre. High-speed / low-speed modes and pulse counter features may be available.
Digital Output
Used for controlling field equipment and for operations such as start/stop commands.

Supported communication protocols

An RTU can communicate with intelligent devices over many different physical channels. Common RTU models communicate over RS-232, RS-485, RS-422 or Ethernet using the following protocols.

  • Modbus
  • Profibus
  • IEC 60870-5-101
  • IEC 60870-5-103
  • IEC 60870-5-104
  • DNP3
  • IEC 60870-6 (ICCP)
  • IEC 61850

TEİAŞ RTU implementation

TEİAŞ RTU systems are installed so that TEİAŞ can monitor events and conditions at the substation and issue remote commands where necessary. Signals are submitted to TEİAŞ via the signal list prepared under the teleinformation plan; after approval they are transmitted to the load dispatch centre over the leased line at 19,200 kbps using the IEC 870-5-101 protocol. Our company provides engineering, installation, support and maintenance with the ABB RTU540 series.
