TEİAŞ prepares a Communication Requirements document for switchyards connecting to it over 154–380 kV lines as renewable energy sources (wind, hydro, geothermal, natural gas and thermal power plants) and sends it to the contractor to be completed before provisional acceptance. The contractor is obliged to prepare the OPGW communication — a part of this scope — before provisional acceptance of the switchyard.
Both ends of the OPGW line are terminated in the OPGW box on the OPGW tower; a non-metallic fiber optic cable is then pulled into the telecom room, where SDH and multiplexer devices are installed. The SDH devices installed at the end of the OPGW lines are used to break data at 155 Mbps (STM-1), 622 Mbps (STM-4) and 2.4 Gbps (STM-16) down to E1 (2 Mbps). Multiplexer devices then take the E1 ports and break them down to 64 kbps ports.

With recent technology, SDH and multiplexer functions are designed into a single chassis, and multiservice systems performing both functions are now used.
