Modular communication equipment is often used, but where it is not, the delivered interface has to be converted depending on the communication infrastructure. The interfaces in use are E1 (G.703), V.35, X.21 and RS-232. Since the interface delivered in transmission systems is usually E1, a converter from E1 to V.35, X.21 or RS-232 lets the existing communication system run unchanged.
E1 – V.35 interface converter
Converts the E1 (G.703) interface — 2 Mbps (32 × 64 kbps) — to V.35. These converters can be set to unframed (full 2 Mbps) or to N × 64, at any rate between 64 kbps and 2,048 kbps.

Fiber E1 converter modems
Converter modems used to carry E1 or ISDN PRI over fiber optic cables. They carry E1 up to 2 km over multi-mode cable and up to 100 km over single-mode cable.
